There are three main types of home insurance: buildings insurance, contents insurance and combined buildings and content insurance.
- Building insurance covers the structure of your home such as walls, windows and the roof.
- Contents insurance covers the possessions within a home.
- Combined building insurance and contents insurance covers both.
Home insurance covers those from theft and protects them against damage that is caused by a number of unseen events such as: flooding, fire and explosions.
Limited accidental damage is covered under home insurance but a more comprehensive cover for accidents would cost extra. Full accidental cover costs between £20-£100 depending on the policy and value of items.
Home insurance can be used to cover portable items such as a phone or handbag whilst being outside a home, however there can be restrictions.
Most insurers will cover a home that is not left unattended for more than 30 consecutive days.
An excess amount is payable upon a claim, most home insurers have two types of excess: a compulsory excess which insurers set and a voluntary excess amount that is set by the individual.
